After we have some lights and reflector set (see previous post: The setting - El arreglo en el estudio), we can start to make some pictures. However is very easy to make some mistakes. Remember we are working on a very dark room; so, the camera is going to have some problems calculating the correct exposition. Also we know that we need some fabrics, clothing and objects able to fluoresce under black light. Usually the first choose are those material that blow a lot; many white clothing does.

If we use Evaluative metering, as exposure control, when there are white cloths or with very bright colors is difficult to expose property. Usually the picture is going to be over expose as the following example. Even some glare can be seen on some cases. The histogram shows a nice gray scale with very small over exposition.

Una vez que las luces y los reflectores están listo en su lugar (ver el post previo: The setting - El arreglo en el estudio), podemos empezar a hacer fotos. Sin embargo es muy sencillo caer en unos errores. Hay que recordar que estamos trabajando en un estudio muy obscuro; entonces la cámara tendrá algunos problemas para determinar la exposición correcta. También sabemos que necesitamos algunas telas, ropas u objetos que brillen bajo la luz negra. Usualmente lo primero que elegimos son materiales que brillan bastante; mucha ropa blanca lo hace.

Si usamos una medición evaluativa para calcular la exposición, cuando hay ropa blanca o de colores muy brillantes será muy difícil exponer adecuadamente. Comúnmente la foto saldrá sobre expuesta como se ve en el siguiente ejemplo. Incluso podremos obtener algunos brillos no deseados. Al observar el histograma hay una buena gama de grises con una pequeña área sobreexpuesta solamente.

A better option is to use Spot metering. But do not use it to measure a very bright color because you are going to get that part of the frame property expose leaving everything else dark. See the next example: the reading was done on the green fabric, the brightest part on frame, making the model disappear on the dark background. Again the histogram shows a not bad gray scale with small underexposed area.

Una mejor opción es usar una medición puntual. Pero no hay que usarla para medir áreas con colores muy brillantes porque si se obtendrá esa parte de la foto correctamente expuesta, pero el resto esta subexpuesta. Tal como se puede ver en la siguiente fotografía: la lectura fue hecha sobre la tela verde, que es lo más brillante en el encuadre, pero la modelo desaparece en el fondo obscuro. Una vez más el histograma muestra un tono de gris aceptable con alguna área subexpuesta.

Here I am back.

Now let's see the set. The lamps are clamp on a tripod; I use two strong plastic or wire straps (one on the top and other on the bottom part). Safety is very important, the power source is heavy and lamps are kind of fragile glass. Then the high is adjusted. The reflector are placed between the tripod and the lamps. The size and color is up to you. Just remember that the color on the picture is going to change depending on the reflector's color. And finally light them ON.

Ahora veamos como se arregla todo el conjunto. Las lamparas se sujetan firmemente a un tripie; yo uso tiras de plástico o de alambre (una en la parte superior y otra en la inferior). Seguridad es muy importante, el regular es pesado y el cristal de las lamparas es algo frágil. Después se ajusta la altura de las lamparas. Y los reflectores se colocan entre el tripie y las lamparas. El tamaño y color de los reflectores es opcional. Solo hay que recordar que el color de las fotografías sera modificado dependiendo del color de los reflectores. Ahora si se pueden prender las lamparas.

You can use one, two or more of these lamps. Their high and position could be modified depending what you want to get. You can use a color background or not; just be careful with very bright backgrounds. The most important thing is the studio should be as dark as possible.

Se pueden usar una, dos o mas lamparas. Su altura y posición puede ser modificada dependiendo de que es lo que quieras obtener. También se pueden usar fondos de color o no; solo hay que tener cuidado con el uso de fondos que brillen demasiado. Lo mas importante es que el estudio debe estar lo mas obscuro posible.

Finally, the props or material to use for black lighting. There are a lot o fabrics, plastic or fluorescent paint that blow very nicely under black light. The skin does not.

Finalmente los materiales auxiliares. Hay muchas telas, plásticos o pinturas fluorescentes que brillan muy bien con la luz negra. La piel prácticamente no brilla con esta luz.

Finally after almost two months, I am back on this blog. And I will try to keeps posting more often.

So, what do we need for black light photography?

We need 3 essential things:

1. Black light lamps: Those are the most important part of the set. It is not possible to do black lighting pictures if you do not have them. They are not difficult to get and there are kind of cheap. Almost any hardware store sell them on two sizes (18 and 48 inches long; 15 and 40 watts respectively). I recommend 2 or 4 bulbs of 48 inches long . Also you need to set a utility fluorescent strip (proper size and power for the bulbs). For portrait I am using 2 sets as the one show in the picture; each set is composed by 2x48 inches bulb and the strip case with a cost around of 50 USD.

Ahora, que se requiere para hacer fotografías con luz negra?

Necesitamos 3 elementos esenciales:

1. Lámparas de luz negra: Esta es la parte más importante, sin ellas no se puede hacer fotografía con luz negra, obviamente. Estas lámparas no son difíciles de conseguir y son relativamente baratas. Se pueden comprar en casi cualquier tienda donde vendan artículos de iluminación (no fotográficas). Las hay de diferentes tamaños y potencias, las más comunes son de 18 y 48 pulgadas, las cuales son de 15 y 40 W respectivamente. Y también se requiere comprar la respectiva caja con su regulador. Para retrato yo utilizo dos conjuntos como los que se muestran en la siguiente foto, es decir 4 lámparas de 48 pulgadas en total. Ese conjunto me costó alrededor de 50 dólares en total.

2. Dark studio or room: the low brightness of the black light lamps require a studio with very low visible light. Of course the number of lamps and darkness of the room is going to be in function of the material and concept that you want to achieve. Some time a little visible light helps. Only when you have a dark studio and the light is on you could see the black light as is shown in the following picture.

2. Estudio o cuarto obscuro: La luz negra es de baja intensidad por lo que es necesario reducir la cantidad de luz visible lo mas que se pueda. Por supuesto la cantidad de lámparas y la obscuridad del estudio dependerá del proyecto o efecto que se tenga en mente. Algunas veces el tener un poco de luz visible puede ayudar en la fotografía. Solo cuando se tiene un estudio suficientemente obscuro se puede ver el brillo de la lámpara encendida como se nuestra en la siguiente foto.

3. Reflectors: This is very helpful element; and this could be the cheapest of all. In the last picture I am showing one example of green fluoresce paper reflector. It cost around one dollar at any office supplies store. It is good to have as many colors as possible; I use 3 pieces of paper for each pair of lamps. One color o combination of them at the same time could be used. Those reflectors are very important because they are the color filling your picture.

3. Reflectores: Un elemento muy útil para este tipo de iluminación y es el más barato de todos. En la ultima fotografía les muestro un reflector de papel fluorescente verde. El costo de una pieza de papel es de aproximadamente 1 dólar en casi cualquier papelería; 3 de ellos son utilizados por cada par de lámparas. Un solo color o combinación de ellos puede ser utilizado. Estos reflectores son muy importantes porque son color de relleno en la fotografía.

Here there are some examples of pictures that I want to show. All of them have made using the same setup of lights, just some little variation on the background or color reflector (you will get surprised when I show what they are, on future post) .

Ahora les muestro algunos ejemplos de fotografías. Todas fueron hechas usando el mismo conjunto y arreglo de luces. Lo único que varía de una a otra es el fondo utilizado y el color de los reflectores que utilizo (te sorprenderás cuando veas que son esos reflectores, en capitulo en el futuro).

Ok, let's start with a very exacting part the background.

First a Black Light definition: Black light is a UV light with a little bit of visible light; our eyes cannot see UV light but they can see the fluorescence that UV produces on some material or chemicals compounds. That fluorescence plus the little visible light can be used to make interesting pictures. But I do not want the type something that is well done on some websites. There are few of them but I can recommend two; they have complementary information.

I do not use the expression UV light instead of Black Light because some people get scare; and ask if they can get skin burn or retina damage. In my knowledge it does not make any of those damages. At less, I have not found information about damages by this kind of UV light. It is a light of very low energy, because it is located on the limit of visible spectrum and UV light. Other reason is because there is other kind of UV photography; that is using filter to block the visible light and just capture UV light. And that is not the kind of photography that I want to talk about in this blog

Ahora sí, empecemos con algo muy emocionante; un poco de teoría.

Primero la definición: Luz Negra es luz ultravioleta (UV) mezclada con un poco de luz visible; nuestros ojos no pueden ver la luz UV pero si pueden ver la florescencia que produce esta luz sobre algunos materiales o compuestos químicos. Esa fluorescencia mas la poca luz visible presente en la Luz Negra puede ser usada para hacer fotografías muy interesantes. Pero no quiero escribir un tratado completo sobre Luz Negra, porque existen muy buenas recopilaciones en internet, muy bien escritas y extensas. Desafortunadamente no he encontrado una buena revisión escrita en español solo la de "wikipedia en español". Pero lean también las revisiones en ingles (sección en ingles) sobre todo la primera es mi favorita.

No me gusta utilizar la expresión de fotografía con Luz UV porque algunas personas se espantan; y empiezan a preguntar si esa luz no produce quemaduras en la piel o daño en la retina. Hasta donde sé, y por la investigación bibliográfica que he hecho no hay daños documentados que sean causados por este tipo de Luz UV, sobre todo porque se trata de una luz de muy baja energía en el límite del espectro visible y el UV. Otra razón para no llamarte fotografía UV, es que existe un tipo de fotografía en la cual se utilizan filtros para bloquear la luz visible y dejan pasar luz UV. Y de ese tipo de fotografía no voy a tratar en este blog.

After nine or ten year without doing back light photography last year I start getting my new set for it. And last December I make my first digital black light pictures. And here is a collage from the first three model that I work with last December.

Después de nueve o diez años sin hacer fotografía utilizando Luz Negra, el año pasado empecé nuevamente a adquirir mi nuevo conjunto de herramientas para esta tipo de iluminación. Hasta que el pasado diciembre hice mis primeros retratos con luz negra en una cámara digital. Y ahora les nuestro una "collage" de fotografias de mis tres primeras modelos con quien trabaje en diciembre.

Before I we get into definitions, setup, techniques and more. I would like to start showing one of my first pictures that I capture years ago, using film and then scanned.

Antes de entrar en definiciones, arreglo de luces, técnica y más. Me gustaría iniciar mostrándoles una de mis primeros retratos que hice hace algunos años, usando película y después escaneada.

This is a self portrait, wearing a swimming hat and some paint on my mustache. Plus few things around me to add more color. It was done using two small black light lamps.

Este es un autorretrato, con un gorro de natación y un poco de pintura en el bigote. Además algunas pocas cosas alrededor para agregar más color. Fue hecha usando dos lámparas pequeñas de luz negra.
